Designing children's space: Creating collective urban spaces has been a constant focus throughout Renet’s career. Her dual education forms the perfect base for her specialisation as a designer of children's spaces. She graduated in 2003 at the Technical University of Delft in architecture with honours, by developing a design tool for architects, focusing on the relation between the built environment and social behaviour. When obtaining an additional degree in Education at the Pedagogical Academy (Hogeschool Inholland 2005) she focused on the relation between the design of a schoolyard and the behaviour of children (bullying, activity, gender integration).
Renet has subsequently worked for 11 years - of which 5 in Amsterdam with www.carve.nl - as a consultant and designer of public spaces for children and their caretakers. She has lived and worked in Cairo, Egypt, for 3 years. Her realised projects cover a broad range: luxurious municipal community squares, school yards, low-budget community projects, projects focusing on special needs children in The Netherlands as well as in Cairo, and projects for refugees and their host communities.
In Cairo she developed a passion for co-creating better play spaces for children, for whom this one play-space still makes a great difference in their daily life.
Therefore, after returning back to The Netherlands, she currently focuses on two services in areas where there is a lack of opportunities to play freely and safely:
- firstly optimising existing children's spaces with simple spatial interventions to reach their full potential
- secondly (co-)designing new playspaces, alone or in a community process
More information on both services can be found in this folder.
